Grandparents’ Day Special: Fostering Relationships with Grandparents After Divorce

The first Sunday after Labor Day is Grandparents’ Day. It is a day to celebrate the important role grandparents play in a child’s life and to celebrate the connections between generations.

Divorce brings a lot of changes. Maintaining a child’s relationship with his or her grandparents during and the after the divorce may provide some stability in a tumultuous time. A parent has a responsibility to act in the best interests of the child. Usually it is in the child’s best interests to have a good relationship with his or her grandparents. In those cases a parent should foster a relationship between the child and the grandparents. Grandparents’ day is no better time to start doing this.

Regular in person visits,  telephone calls or, if the grandparent is technologically savvy, a virtual visit via Zoom, FaceTime or Skype will all help foster that relationship. Maybe the child will even learn about old technology (LINK).

Divorced parents should talk with their child about the importance of each of their grandparents. They should put aside their feelings towards their former in-laws and help their child maintain a healthy and positive relationship with the grandparents. Encourage the child to make a small gift or homemade card. Remember, it is the thought that counts, not the size of the gift.

Grandparents are an integral part of a child’s development who can provide a child with a sense of comfort, be an excellent listener and a great role model. So, make it a point to celebrate Grandparents’ Day, especially this year.
